The original plans for the Golden Gate Bridge prescribed the complete demolition of Fort Point, the century-old brick stronghold situated on a point at the narrow mouth of San Francisco Bay. Fortunately, Chief Engineer Joseph Strauss insisted on its preservation, and modified the design to straddle the landmark. Here, the summer sun sets through his graceful arch, silhouetting the bridge and fort.
